Chronic pain is classified into two major types. The first is musculoskeletal (MSK) pain which is related to the bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and the second is nerve pain or neuropathic pain often felt as a burning sensation or shooting pain that is caused directly by nerve or tissue damage. In its most simplistic form pain is defined as being chronic if it persists for at least three months. If you have been experiencing pain for three months or more then you definitely have chronic pain that must be dealt with immediately.
Many people wonder just how common chronic pain is in the Canadian population. A 2011 study from Queen’s University, conducted a study in which they assessed the prevalence of chronic pain in the Canadian population by asking the simple question “Are you usually free of pain or discomfort?” Their findings pinpointed that chronic pain affects 55% of the Canadian population. Furthermore, they found that patients primarily reported having pain in their back, joints or head, whether it was from MSK conditions or other underlying conditions. It is important to know that pain in these areas can be directly caused by a trauma or physical event such as a car accident or a slip and fall. But, it is crucial to know that most often the pain is presented as non-specific or without a definitive underlying cause. However, the large variety of underlying structural and/or mechanical causes can be specifically addressed though proper conservative care.
Time for the good news! Chronic pain sufferers have available care at their fingertips! Conservative care, including chiropractic, alleviates both acute and chronic symptoms as well as correcting a variety of underlying mechanical dysfunctions and further recommending exercises to keep the body moving. A 2012 U.S. study following 272 neck-pain patients for over 12 weeks randomly assigned participants to one of three groups: 91 to the spinal manipulation therapy group, 90 to the medication group, and 91 to the home exercise group. After analyzing the results, they found that patients receiving chiropractic treatment in combination with exercise for chronic pain were twice as likely to become pain-free than those receiving medication. Most importantly, this clearly identifies the benefits of receiving the proper chiropractic treatment instead of relying on medication. In addition, the results presented are encouraging as they provide an option for chronic pain sufferers who prefer not to take medication to manage their pain.
In sum, regular chiropractic care is vital towards alleviating any sort of chronic pain. Chiropractic care, as part of the healthcare system, plays a vital role in both the assessment and management of chronic pain related to MSK conditions. As time proceeds, so does the abundance of studies providing evidence of effective relief of chronic pain directly through chiropractic treatment. The knee is the largest joint in our body and has to withstand various stresses as we go about our day to day activities. Many of us have experienced a knee problem at some point in our lives, whether from playing sports or working around the house, but sometimes discomfort can develop for no apparent reason at all.
Knee pain can come from inside the joint where important structures such as the weight bearing cartilage – meniscus, ligaments – ACL and PCL, or from the surrounding muscles, tendons or bursa. It may start suddenly from an acute injury (such as falling, twisting the knee, bending the wrong way, or a direct blow while playing sports). Acute injuries can lead to a buildup of scar tissue which can become more problematic than the original injury itself. Knee pain can also develop over time from overuse or daily wear and tear, often causing symptoms of Osteoarthritis.
Pain or soreness in or around the knee
Pain may increase with squatting, twisting, or going up/down stairs
Swelling and/or bruising
Limited range of motion
Stiffness, especially after not moving for a period of time
Popping or grinding
Knee may lock, catch or give way
It’s important to know that some people may be more likely to develop knee problems than others. Certain jobs, sports or recreational activities, genetic postural predisposition and other conditions (like gout, rheumatoid arthritis or osteoporosis) can also contribute to one developing knee issues.

The length of time is determined by the dose and the size of the area being treated.
The light energy will pass through the skin and into your tissues, where it will be absorbed. The light energy helps to lessen inflammation and promote regeneration of damaged tissue. It generally takes more than a single treatment to feel better. How many it takes will vary depending on how much damage there is to your knee. You may need to return 3-4 times per week for a few weeks or months.
Does the procedure hurt?
You might feel a slight tingling sensation, but you won’t feel heat or cold. It’s also painless. There’s no lengthy recovery time, so you can go home right away.

Effect of Laser Therapy on Chronic Osteoarthritis of the Knee in Older Subjects Conclusion: It can be concluded that addition of LLLT to exercise training program is more effective than exercise training alone in the treatment of older patients with chronic knee OA and the rate of improvement may be dose dependent, as with 6 J/cm2 or 3 J/cm2.
