The Many Benefits of Chiropractic Care

The benefits of chiropractic care can ultimately prevent years of unwanted suffering and/or improve your quality of life to new and improved heights. Below are the top nine most significant scientific reasons why YOUR entire family should be under regular chiropractic care.

#1: Chiropractic Adds Life and Improves Structural Wellness Regular chiropractic care promotes a sense of “health-confidence” and self-confidence. In turn, this ensures to enhance your first impression that you impose on others that you meet. Thus, whether it is your business or your personal life, your posture directly speaks for you before you even have the chance to utter a single word. With Chiropractic care patients learn to take charge of their own well-being, which in turn enhances their longevity by adding a heightened quality-of-life.

#2: Chiropractic Improves Sleep Quality – Chiropractic patients have an improved quality of life, including sleep quality, due to a significant reduction in pain and anxiety. Further, the improvement in sleep quality leads to an enhancement in your immune system, enabling you to successfully fight diseases.

#3: Chiropractic Reduces Dependency on Medications – Individuals who maintain regular chiropractic care are far less likely to overuse medication. This prevents an abundance of dangerous side effects, including the possibility of fatality. In addition, long-term use of pain medication may actually worsen the very symptoms they were intended to reduce, known as a “rebound” reaction.

#4: Chiropractic Care Encourages Increased Physical Activity – Obtain a jump start to your day by having the ability to move more with less pain. Chiropractic patients report improved function and with that, an increased ability to stick to a regular exercise program.

#5: Chiropractic Reduces Stress – With proper chiropractic care one can have their stress levels reduced significantly, allowing the body to achieve a heightened sense of wellness. Further, regular chiropractic care ensures that patients will be able to regularly engage in exercise, which is vital to reducing stress and preventing stress-related anxiety and depression.

Sciatica

Sciatica is primarily characterized by pain that originates specifically in the low back or buttocks region and travels into one or both of the legs. Doctors of Chiropractic (DC) have been regularly treating sciatica for decades. It is important to inform the public that sciatic nerve pain varies in both the intensity and frequency. Sciatic nerve pain ranges on the spectrum from: minimal, moderate, severe and occasional, intermittent, frequent, and/or constant. Most of the pain has been described as being dull, achy, sharp, toothache-like, pins and needles, or similar to an electric shock. There are a variety of other symptoms associated with sciatica including burning, and numbness and tingling sensations. Other names that have been utilized for sciatica include: radiating or referred pain, neuropathy, or neuralgia.

One of the most prominent misconceptions is that sciatica is a disorder, yet it is actually a symptom of a disorder. Generally, sciatica is caused directly from a sciatic nerve compression. The various disorders which are known to cause sciatic nerve pain include the following: lumbar spine Subluxations (misaligned vertebral bodies), herniated or bulging disks (slipped disks), pregnancy and childbirth, tumors, and non-spinal disorders such as diabetes, constipation, or sitting on one’s back pocket wallet. Another problem that may arise from sciatic nerve compression may result in the loss of feeling (sensory loss), paralysis of a single limb or a group of muscles (monoplegia), and insomnia.

Chiropractic Treatment of Sciatic Symptoms:

Chiropractic treatment is done in order to effectively help the body’s potential to heal itself. It is based on the scientific principle that restrictions in spinal movement promotes pain and reduces function and performance. Chiropractic care is beneficial as it is non-invasive (non-surgical) and drug-free!

Adjustments (Spinal Manipulation)

At the very core of chiropractic care are spinal adjustments, also referred to as spinal manipulations. The benefits of adjustments is that it frees the restriction of the movement of the spine and further helps to restore misaligned vertebral bodies to their proper position in the spinal column. Furthermore, spinal adjustments helps to reduce nerve irritability that is responsible for causing inflammation, muscle spasm, pain, and other symptoms related to sciatica. It is important to point out that adjustments should not be painful! Additionally, spinal adjustments have been proven to be safe and effective.

So if you or loved are suffering from Sciatic Pain please make sure that the spine is evaluated as soon as possible as it is a likely source and could be contributing to the symptoms of chronic pain.

Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is classified into two major types. The first is musculoskeletal (MSK) pain which is related to the bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and the second is nerve pain or neuropathic pain often felt as a burning sensation or shooting pain that is caused directly by nerve or tissue damage. In its most simplistic form pain is defined as being chronic if it persists for at least three months. If you have been experiencing pain for three months or more then you definitely have chronic pain that must be dealt with immediately.

Many people wonder just how common chronic pain is in the Canadian population. A 2011 study from Queen’s University, conducted a study in which they assessed the prevalence of chronic pain in the Canadian population by asking the simple question “Are you usually free of pain or discomfort?” Their findings pinpointed that chronic pain affects 55% of the Canadian population. Furthermore, they found that patients primarily reported having pain in their back, joints or head, whether it was from MSK conditions or other underlying conditions. It is important to know that pain in these areas can be directly caused by a trauma or physical event such as a car accident or a slip and fall. But, it is crucial to know that most often the pain is presented as non-specific or without a definitive underlying cause. However, the large variety of underlying structural and/or mechanical causes can be specifically addressed though proper conservative care.

Time for the good news! Chronic pain sufferers have available care at their fingertips! Conservative care, including chiropractic, alleviates both acute and chronic symptoms as well as correcting a variety of underlying mechanical dysfunctions and further recommending exercises to keep the body moving. A 2012 U.S. study following 272 neck-pain patients for over 12 weeks randomly assigned participants to one of three groups: 91 to the spinal manipulation therapy group, 90 to the medication group, and 91 to the home exercise group. After analyzing the results, they found that patients receiving chiropractic treatment in combination with exercise for chronic pain were twice as likely to become pain-free than those receiving medication. Most importantly, this clearly identifies the benefits of receiving the proper chiropractic treatment instead of relying on medication. In addition, the results presented are encouraging as they provide an option for chronic pain sufferers who prefer not to take medication to manage their pain.

In sum, regular chiropractic care is vital towards alleviating any sort of chronic pain. Chiropractic care, as part of the healthcare system, plays a vital role in both the assessment and management of chronic pain related to MSK conditions. As time proceeds, so does the abundance of studies providing evidence of effective relief of chronic pain directly through chiropractic treatment. If you are suffering from chronic pain and want immediate relief take the next step and book an appointment!
