Arthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA), commonly known as joint disease or degenerative arthritis, greatly impacts more than 27 million Americans and well over 4.4 million Canadians. With such a large number of Canadians already reported having OA in 2010 this number is expected to soar by 2040 reaching over 10.4 million people. Most commonly, OA affects the hips, knees, lower back, neck, and hands, but it may affect any joint in the human body. Significantly it is the most common chronic condition of the joints.

Common characteristics of osteoarthritis include inflammation of tissues surrounding joints, damaged cartilage, and bony growths around joint edges. Symptoms seem to start slowly with pain and stiffness of the joint. Furthermore, the stiffness is prominent in the morning and tends to dampen throughout the day. Other symptoms:

  • Larger than usual joints of affected area.
  • Recurring stiffness due to sedentary lifestyle.
  • Tenderness in affected area.
  • Joints have reduced range of motion.
  • Joints making grating or crackly sounds during movement.
  • Loss of muscle tone.

Even though the damage of osteoarthritis is irreversible, symptoms may be alleviated and/or successfully managed. Often patients can avoid the need for joint replacement!

PHOTOTHERAPY / LOW LEVEL LASER THERAPY:

The BioFlex Laser Therapy is a medical treatment that utilizes low-level lasers and/or other light sources like LEDs with specific wavelengths. The use of super luminous and laser diodes is efficient at irradiating diseases or traumatized tissue with photons. These tiny particles of energy are absorbed by cellular target molecules called photoacceptors, which results in the initiation of a cascade of complex physiological reactions. To clarify, this promotes the restoration of normal cell structure and function therefore creating a healing response.

Furthermore, Bioflex Laser Therapy is considered safe and non-invasive, painless and drug-free. There have been no reported adverse results or side effects throughout the company’s nearly 30 year history. An abundance of clinical studies have demonstrated significant benefits of using Low Level Laser Therapy/ Phototherapy, as it effectively reduces pain and inflammation caused by arthritis and further improves the microcirculation in the irradiated area. Be proactive and manage your Osteoarthritis with Bioflex Laser therapy!

Arthritic Changes Can Be Stopped and, YES, in Some Cases Reversed

More than four million Canadians have some from of arthritis. This equates to about 15 percent of the population and is expected to rise to 18 per cent by the year 2020. Close to 80 per cent of people over the age of 50 have osteoarthritis. It’s an affliction that costs billions of dollars to treat and according to medicine, is an irreversible condition.

The most popular way to treat the symptoms of arthritis is simply to offer pain relief using non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), which include Ibuprofen, Aspirin and Naproxen, and another group of drugs call COX-2 inhibitors, such as Celebrex and Vioxx. At best, these drugs provide temporary relief but may also lead to further deterioration of the joints and surrounding tissue by inhibiting the formation of cartilage. Long-term use of NSAIDS may lead to stomach ulcers, gastro-intestinal bleeding, kidney damage and toxicity to auditory nerve cells, which can lead to tinnitus (ringing in the ears).

Recently, more alarming research shows COX-2 inhibitors may actually increase the risk of heart disease by creating an imbalance that promotes blood clotting and blood vessel constriction. The study, done on patients taking Vioxx, showed higher rates of heart attacks and other cardiovascular complications. The downside of drug therapy is the risk of side effects and damage to other bodily systems. It doesn’t make sense to simply numb the pain of arthritic symptoms while the condition worsens as time goes on.

Caring for arthritis can be done naturally by adopting lifestyle and dietary changes as well as using chiropractic care to regain normal joint mobility and better posture in order to stop or reverse degeneration.

The common misconception is that arthritis is irreversible and is an inevitable process of aging. This is a FALLACY as many people in their senior years have perfectly healthy joints while others have arthritis in only a few areas and have other joints that are completely unaffected.
When healthy, joint surfaces have a smooth lining of cartilage and an adequate amount of synovial fluid that lubricates the joints. With improper join mechanics from poor posture and negative lifestyle factors (a lack of exercise and/or poor nutrition), cartilage breaks down and less synovial fluid is produced. With time, the joint space decreases and cartilage surface becomes irregular. Inflammation sets in as a natural response where the body senses an area of injury. When the causative effects are not addressed, inflammation becomes chronic. As joints become unstable, bony growths will form – called bone spurs or osteophytes – as the body attempts to stabilize a weakened area. Usually, it is imbalance in spinal biomechanics that sets the stage for arthritis that shows up later on in weight-bearing joints, such as the knees and hips. Joint degeneration, which is what arthritis is, can be present without symptoms.

On X-rays, these are easily seen. Interestingly, these abnormal calcium deposits can be detected early in spinal joints before any symptoms show up elsewhere in the body. Spinal X-rays done in a chiropractor’s office can point to areas where such degeneration has already started.

On a clinical note, I have witnessed many people in there 20s and 30s with early signs of joint degeneration on X-rays but they are unaware of a potential problem because no symptoms are associated with it.

The best analogy to describe such degeneration is the analogy of erosion of tooth enamel by a cavity. This be can present for a long time before pain is actually felt. Any degree of degeneration around spinal joints will interfere with the delicate nerves that exit from the spinal cord and control the rest of your body. Abnormal spinal joints cause general ill health because nerves that are associated with these joints will have abnormal impulses that feed various body parts. This not only interferes with certain bodily systems but also interferes with the healing process that is under the direction of the nerve system. Unfortunately, by the time abnormal bony growths are evident on X-rays, joint degeneration has been present for years or even decades.

This is why prevention through exercise, nutrition and chiropractic care is the first answer to stop this epidemic of arthritis!

Early detection is the next best thing rather than the current disease care aimed at controlling symptoms. Exercise is absolutely crucial for maintaining normal joint function throughout life. Even those with full-blown symptoms can swim or do gentle yoga classes, or walk around the block for 10 minutes a day. In conjunction with exercise, chiropractic care works to restore normal joint mechanics and improve postural distortions so degeneration around the spine does not affect the delicate spinal nerves that control the rest of your body. Furthermore, the more balanced and healthier the spine, the less likely arthritis will occur in other body parts, especially weight-bearing joints.

Evidence shows arthritic changes can be stopped and, in some cases, reversed with chiropractic adjustments, laser therapy, appropriate exercise, as well as, providing natural relief from joint pain and inflammation.
